India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will be decorated with Ghana’s highest national distinction, the Order of the Star of Ghana, during a historic two-day state visit beginning tomorrow.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at a press briefing on Monday, July 1, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Accra.
Prime Minister Modi’s trip marks a diplomatic milestone, as he becomes the first sitting Indian leader to visit Ghana in over three decades. The visit is aimed at reinforcing the long-standing ties between the two nations, which date back more than 60 years.
During the state visit, Prime Minister Modi will be officially received by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House.
He is also scheduled to address Ghana’s Parliament and witness the signing of a series of bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering sectors such as trade, infrastructure, health, education, and digital technology.
A key highlight of the visit will be the conferment of the Order of the Star of Ghana, a recognition reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Ghana or the advancement of its international relations.
The honour places Prime Minister Modi in the company of other distinguished global leaders who have previously received the award, including former French President Jacques Chirac, Kenyan President William Ruto, and former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo.
Ghana and India enjoy deep-rooted ties spanning diplomacy, trade, technology, and cultural exchange. Indian investments in Ghana’s pharmaceutical, energy, and agricultural sectors have steadily grown over the years, while development cooperation between the two countries has expanded under successive administrations.
With Prime Minister Modi’s visit, both nations are expected to solidify these bonds and chart new paths of collaboration aligned with the changing global economic and geopolitical landscape.
