Infrastructural development remain paramount in our strategy- Prez Mahama

President John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to refurbishing existing sports stadia and building more youth resource centers as part of efforts to revamp Ghana’s sports especially, grassroots sports in the country.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, the President emphasized the need to reposition youth sports development in the country.

During his State of the Nation Address on Thursday on the floor of parliament, Mahama outlined his government’s plans to refurbish existing sports stadia, build more youth resource centers, and complete new sports facilities in the new regions.

“Government is committed to refurbishing existing sports stadia and building more youth resource centers. Infrastructural development remain paramount in our strategy. The government is committed to refurbishing existing national stadia, completing more youth resource centers and completing new sports facilities in the new regions.”

Mahama revealed that, the government’s strategy will also prioritizes community recreational facilities to encourage greater participation in sports at the grassroots level especially at the inter-school competitions.

“We will also prioritize community recreational facilities to foster greater participation in sports at the grassroot level. Recognizing the critical role of youth development, we are implementing a significance overhaul of grassroot sports with the establishment of the school sports authority. This body will oversee structured inter-school competitions and talent identification initiatives essential for nurturing future sporting champions. Over 60% of Ghana’s elite athletes have emerged from these school sports program.”

By establishing the School Sports Authority, President Mahama aims to revitalize Ghana’s sports sector, which has experienced a decline in recent years.
