Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister for the Interior
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has expressed concern over the surge in unregistered and untraceable arms entering Ghana, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to national security.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com, he made these remarks during a working visit to the Northern Region on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, noting that the influx of illegal arms has led to a rise in incidents of indiscriminate gunfire, often triggered by minor disagreements.
“The number of arms in the hands of our citizens is reaching an alarming level. It’s giving the Peace Council, the police, and other security agencies a lot of headaches. At the slightest provocation, you hear a gunshot. How did the people get the guns?” he quizzed.
The Member of Parliament for Asawase stressed the need for an urgent and unified national response to the proliferation of firearms to ensure effective tracking and regulation.
“We need private individuals to partner with the government, this cannot be done by the government alone. Technology has advanced to the point where we should be able to use it to detect who imports and sells these guns. How can we leverage technology to make our country safer?” he added.
