Is Hon. Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia the General who knows the Battlefield?

A river that forgets its source will soon dry up. As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) seeks a new leader for the 2028 general election, it is essential to remember the party’s foundational ethos—unity, service, and progress.

When the winds of change blow, some build walls, while others build windmills. As Ghana’s political landscape prepares for a new chapter, the NDC must choose a leader who can harness these winds to propel the party to victory.

While the credibility of Global InfoAnalytics is not in question, conducting surveys before candidates officially declare their intentions can be problematic. Premature surveys risk sowing division within the party and raising false hopes among aspirants. Waiting until candidates formally declare will provide more meaningful insights into public sentiment and help shape the narrative around each contender.

As the political tides shift and the party gears up for its primaries, it is imperative that the NDC considers a candidate who embodies its values and resonates deeply with its grassroots. In this regard, Hon. Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia represents the hope and vision Ghanaians deserve in their next leader.

With an impressive track record, unwavering commitment to party ideals, and a deep connection with the grassroots, Asiedu Nketia is well-positioned to lead the NDC to victory—and potentially become the next President of Ghana.

Asiedu Nketia’s political career spans over three decades, marked by notable achievements. As Member of Parliament for the Wenchi West constituency, he served on key committees including Appointments, Finance, and Public Accounts. His tenure as Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture (Crops) from 1997 to 2001 showcased his ability to deliver results and contribute meaningfully to national development.

As General Secretary of the NDC, Asiedu Nketia played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s direction. His election in 2005 with nearly 80% of the vote—and re-election in 2010 with 93%—is a testament to his leadership and the trust he commands. Under his stewardship, the NDC has maintained a strong grassroots presence, and his unmatched ability to connect with the base has been instrumental in sustaining party momentum.

One of his greatest strengths lies in his unwavering bond with the grassroots. Nicknamed “General Mosquito,” Asiedu Nketia has consistently demonstrated a knack for navigating Ghana’s political complexities and mobilising broad-based support. The opposition’s discomfort with his presence is a clear indication of his formidable influence and the threat he poses to competing interests.

Known for his forthrightness and courage to speak truth to power, Asiedu Nketia is not afraid to take unpopular positions or challenge entrenched systems. This principled stance is essential for a leader committed to meaningful reform. His refusal to bow to personal interest or bias enhances his appeal to Ghanaians seeking a leader who will truly prioritise their needs.

His experience, persistence, and work ethic make him an ideal candidate to lead Ghana into a new era of progress. Asiedu Nketia’s deep understanding of Ghana’s challenges and opportunities—combined with his loyalty to the NDC’s core values—positions him to craft policies that foster economic growth, improve livelihoods, and advance social justice.

While Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is also a formidable candidate, it would be strategic for him to consider supporting Asiedu Nketia’s bid. By doing so, he can help consolidate the party’s strength, leverage Asiedu Nketia’s grassroots appeal, and build a more unified front. After the General’s tenure, Haruna Iddrisu could step in to continue the vision, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity of the party’s development agenda.

As the dawn breaks and casts light across the political landscape, one thing becomes clear: a wise farmer knows when to sow the right seeds for a fruitful harvest. Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia, with his principled leadership and enduring grassroots connection, is poised to sow unity, service, and progress—not just for the NDC, but for the nation.

With a strong leadership team and renewed commitment to its ideals, the NDC is positioned for major gains in the next election. Asiedu Nketia’s leadership and ability to inspire the grassroots make him a strong contender for the presidency. If President Mahama and his administration continue delivering results, Ghanaians may very well renew their mandate. The NDC’s momentum could shape the future of Ghana.
