It’s evil for NPP to allow GHS250 salary to sweepers under Zoomlion contract — Malik Basintale

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has criticised the immediate past New Patriotic Party government for allowing the sanitation module contract to remain in its current form.

The contract arrangement allocates a total of GHS850 per worker, but only GHS250 is paid directly to each sweeper, with the rest retained by Zoomlion for operational and administrative costs.

However, in a social media post on Friday, April 25, Basintale, who also serves as Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, said this must change under the John Mahama-led administration.

He vowed never to renew the contract in its current form, citing the government’s commitment to ensuring the betterment of workers.

“All my life, I have fought for integrity and for the better placement of the youth and people of Ghana.

“For 7 years, 9 months, the NPP renewed the Zoomlion contract in its current state, paying the Ghanaian youth/worker GHS250. It is EVIL for the previous government to have committed to this, and I SHALL STOP IT,” he wrote.

“H.E John Dramani Mahama came to review, reset, and bring Ghana back on track. This includes ensuring that every worker is paid satisfactorily for the work done.

“I promise on my honor, as I stand by the grave of my late dad, NOT to RENEW the contract in its CURRENT STATE or FORM,” he stressed.

This comes after investigative journalist and author Manasseh Azure Awuni urged the government not to renew its contract with waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited over its management of sweepers.

Manasseh argues that any official who signs the contract, which expired in September 2024, is either “a thief or a fool.”
