The immediate past Chief Executive of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, says it is a good decision that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing post-election thank-you tour.
According to him, the tour, which was initially intended to regroup and reenergize the party’s base after its loss in the 2024 elections, has instead begun to breed tensions.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM on Wednesday, April 30, the Vice Chairman of the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer campaign urged party leaders to remain united.
“The current thank-you tour has turned into an unnecessary competition, and it is good for Kennedy Agyapong to withdraw,” he said.
“Leaders in the party must remain united and be a symbol of unity for party supporters to follow. This thank-you tour is not new; it has existed since 1992,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ohene Agyapong has cited safety concerns and hostility towards him and his supporters as the reason for his withdrawal.
According to the outspoken politician, the recent stabbing of one of his supporters by a party vigilante and a tense encounter with Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, are clear indications that he is not welcome on the tour.
“It is a clear indication. What happened in Kumasi tells me that, look, you are not needed. You are not wanted. So we are pulling out. Let them do their own thing,” he said in an interview on Wednesday.
“Myself and my team want to pull out. Lives are threatened and I don’t think I can protect my team enough, so I will pull out so Dr. Bawumia can continue with his campaign,” he added.
