Ghana international Abdul Baba Rahman has called on authorities to prioritize the improvement of football pitches across the country to support the growth and development of the sport.
Poor pitch conditions have long been a concern in Ghana, with the country even facing the risk of hosting some 2022 World Cup qualifiers outside its borders due to substandard facilities.
Baba Rahman, who has been absent from the Black Stars squad since July 2023, is urging decision-makers to take the issue seriously and invest in better playing surfaces for the future of Ghanaian football.
“This is a serious issue that needs urgent attention,”
“I’m pleading with those in charge, let’s at least ensure the national team has a proper pitch to play on. Sometimes it’s really embarrassing.”
“You go back to your club after international duty, and your teammates mock the country because of the pitches we play on. It’s honestly a national disgrace.”
“I understand the weather makes pitch maintenance difficult, but we still need to make the effort. Improving our pitches will benefit all our national teams, from the juniors to the women’s sides.” He told Joy Sports.
Baba Rahman isn’t the only player to raise concerns about the state of football pitches in Ghana. Thomas Partey also made a similar appeal, calling on former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to help provide a better stadium for the Black Stars to play quality football.
Partey made the call during a meeting between the national team and Dr. Bawumia, who visited the squad ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic.
