Jordan Ayew leads the way in unwanted relegation record

Following Leicester City’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday, the Foxes and Jordan Ayew have been relegated from the Premier League yet again.

Their latest relegation is the second time in the last three seasons, a statistic that highlights the struggles of Leicester City.

The Foxes regained promotion to the Premier League prior to the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, a number of factors, including losing manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea and midfielder-in-chief Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to the Blues before the start of the season, has led to their disastrous campaign.

Nonetheless, Leicester tried to beef up their squad under erstwhile manager Steve Cooper, who made a number of important signings for the club, not least re-uniting with former player Jordan Ayew.

On August 23, 2024, Ayew completed his move from Crystal Palace to Leicester City for £5million.

Ayew has contributed his quota to Leicester City in a hugely underwhelming season, scoring four goals in 25 league matches.

Ayew has seemingly lost his place in Leicester City’s squad in recent weeks, with under-fire manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy opting for other players.

The Ghanaian has been an unused substitute in Leicester City’s last three games, with his only appearance an 11-minute cameo against Manchester City on April 2.

On Sunday afternoon, Leicester’s relegation was confirmed after Trent Alexander Arnold slammed home the only goal in their game against Liverpool.

It meant that, for the third time, Jordan Ayew has been relegated from the Premier League – the highest number of times a Ghanaian has suffered relegation in the  English top flight.

He endured his first relegation while playing for Aston Villa in the 2015/16 season before going down with Swansea in the 2017/18 season.

In addition to Ayew, Ghanaian teammate Fatawu Issahaku, who has made 11 league appearances due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, faces the same fate while Kamldeen Sulemana and Southampton’s fate was sealed weeks ago.
