A former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, also known as Kabila, has called for the codification of Ghana’s history and traditional succession plans to effectively address chieftaincy-related conflicts across the country.

Speaking on JoyNews AM on June 30, 2025, with a particular focus on the recent Nkwanta tribal conflict, Kabila emphasised that the absence of clearly documented succession arrangements frequently leads to disputes and unrest.

He asserted that the lack of clearly defined and legally backed succession plans often creates confusion, enabling individuals without legitimate claims to chieftaincy titles to instigate disturbances.

“The truth is those who are fully aware that they are not entitled are the ones who start the chaos,” Kabila stated.

He stressed that such codification would help eliminate ambiguities surrounding traditional leadership succession and foster peace, which he deemed essential for national development.

The call comes in the wake of escalating tribal violence in Nkwanta, Oti Region, which led the Ghana Education Service (GES) to order the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School. The violence resulted in three students being shot within two days.

This decision by the GES followed urgent consultations between education authorities and security officials.

On Thursday, June 26, two female day students sustained gunshot wounds while en route to school.

The violence continued on Friday, June 27, when a male student was tragically killed by a stray bullet inside his classroom during mock examinations.
