KATH doctor’s death a national shame — Dr. Asah-Asante blasts gov’t

Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a respected Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has launched a scathing critique of the government, condemning it for what he described as an unforgivable failure in the tragic death of Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori, an emergency physician at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Dr. Asah-Asante did not mince words as he held the state accountable for its negligence, saying the avoidable death of one of the country’s most critical healthcare professionals speaks volumes about the collapse of national leadership and the decay within public institutions.

“We have not done justice to our departed brother. We must bow our heads in shame,” he said gravely, calling the circumstances surrounding Dr. Ofori’s death both unjust and disgraceful.

For Dr. Asah-Asante, the tragedy is symptomatic of a much wider crisis—a nation slowly bleeding from systemic failure, poor governance, and a lack of political will to protect its own citizens, even those who serve on the frontlines.

“We need to organise ourselves so that we feel a sense of belonging to this state — prepared to fight and die for it when the time comes,” he stressed, urging Ghanaians to reawaken their sense of duty, demand accountability, and reclaim their nation from the grip of indifference.

Addressing the growing wave of youth and professionals fleeing the country in search of better prospects abroad, he laid the blame squarely at the feet of those in power.

“Leaders complain about young people fleeing the country, but who can blame them when leadership fails so badly? Ghanaians must open their eyes and vote out those who fail them.”

Dr. Asah-Asante’s comments come amid growing national outrage over worsening conditions in Ghana’s healthcare sector and broader concerns over the erosion of trust in public service delivery. His call echoes a rising chorus demanding not just justice for Dr. Adu Ofori, but a complete overhaul of the leadership culture that allowed such a tragedy to occur in the first place.
