Kennedy Agyapong and Bawumia’s camps ‘fight’ over who has more MPs’ support

The camps of two New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls, Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are in a growing contest over who enjoys greater support from the party’s Members of Parliament.

In an interview on Accra-based AsaasePa FM on Wednesday, June 18, Dr. Palgrage Boakye-Danquah, a member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, claimed that 50 NPP MPs have declared their support for the former Assin Central MP.

He further alleged that internal projections place Mr. Agyapong at 37% grassroots support—only 13% away from securing the flagbearer position.

“With just 13% more, he will cross the line. Many are breaking away from the Vice-President’s camp; Bryan Acheampong is contesting, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is also contesting, but Kennedy Agyapong is uniting MPs and the grassroots,” he said.

“As we speak, 50 of our MPs have declared for Kennedy,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah added.

In a response on Thursday, June 19, Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to Dr. Bawumia, disputed the claims, stating that the party’s 2024 flagbearer has the backing of 67 MPs.

“Of the about 88 NPP MPs in Parliament, 67 are genuinely for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Eight are indifferent, and the rest are for other candidates or themselves,” he posted on Facebook.

The NPP, at its National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 elections.

Aside from Bawumia and Agyapong, other likely contenders include former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, and others.
