A communication member of the New Patriotic Party, Kwasi Kwarteng, has hailed the marketability of former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong.
Some members of the opposition NPP have questioned the one-time flagbearer contender on why the Assin Central seat he held for 24 years flipped to the NDC after he bowed out of Parliament.
Responding to this in a social media post on Thursday, April 3, the former Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education noted that the seat was originally an NDC stronghold.
He explained that constituents did not necessarily support the NPP but the candidacy of Mr. Agyapong, whom he says can command votes from both NPP and NDC.
“Before Kennedy Agyapong became an NPP MP, the Assin North, now Assin Central, was traditionally a stronghold of the NDC. His candidacy, however, fundamentally reshaped the constituency’s political dynamics, securing NPP victories for 24 years.
“The key question, then, is not simply why Assin Central returned to the NDC after his exit, but rather why a traditionally NDC-leaning constituency repeatedly voted for Kennedy Agyapong under the NPP banner for over two decades. The answer is clear: their loyalty was to him, not necessarily to the party. This presents a crucial political reality that a candidate’s personal appeal can sometimes outweigh party allegiance,” reads part of his post.
Mr. Kwarteng, who has openly declared his support for Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for NPP flagbearer in 2028, noted that the latter’s ability to command votes from both NPP and NDC highlights his unique cross-party appeal—an asset the party must not overlook in future strategic decisions.
