Kennedy Agyapong doesn’t need much marketing – Kwesi Kwarteng says ahead of NPP’s 2026 primaries

Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential team, whom he describes as a prominent contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s 2028 flagbearership, does not require lengthy campaign periods to gain traction among party members.

According to Kwesi Kwarteng, Kennedy Agyapong has long-standing records of visibility and influence within the party, which reduces the need for extended “marketability” ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.

He mentioned that the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is amongst the prominent contenders who also do not need a long period to market himselves to the grassroots.

“If you look at the candidates, particularly the dominant ones—I mean the Honourable Kennedy Agyapong and Dr Bawumia, I am not sure these are candidates who need time to market themselves,” he said on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, June 18.

“Kennedy Agyapong, for instance, has been in the space since 1992 as a founding member of the party. Dr Bawumia, too, has been very active for at least the past 16 years.”

While Kwesi Kwarteng acknowledged that the National Council has the constitutional authority to determine the timing of the primaries, he said the Mr Agyapong campaign team is still reviewing the decision and will issue its official position in due course.

Nonetheless, he stated that the team respects the Council’s mandate.

“I’m sure they [the Council] might have consulted further and considered a lot of factors before arriving at such a decision. We are going to respect that constitutional provision,” he added.

The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, 31st January 2026.

The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

This announcement by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, sets the stage for a decisive contest to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries.”
