New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has reaffirmed his confidence in Alhaji Fuseini Baba Gushegu by reappointing him as the Northern Regional Coordinator for his 2028 presidential campaign.
Alhaji Baba, who led Agyapong’s regional campaign team during the party’s 2023 primaries, earned widespread praise for his strategy and grassroots appeal, with many describing him as “smart” and “strategic.” His reappointment is seen as a continuation of the momentum built during that internal contest.
Speaking to Hassan Amadu, the Northern Regional Communications Lead for the campaign, he stressed the critical role Alhaji Baba played in boosting Kennedy Agyapong’s numbers during the last primaries.
“When you look at the numbers Kennedy Agyapong polled in the last primaries, you will realise that Northern Region contributed greatly to it. Which pushed Dr. Bawumia to far below the percentage they expected. And you can’t underestimate Baba Gushegu’s role,” he stated.
He continued, “This is the time to double the efforts we put into the 2023 primaries. We are not going to sleep on the job. Alhaji Baba Gushegu and the entire team are ready. And we going to make Ken lead the NPP into 2028 elections as its flagbearer.”
The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026. The date was agreed upon during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on June 17, 2025.
The announcement by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua signals the beginning of a new chapter in the party’s succession race, as it seeks to position a candidate for the 2028 general elections. With this early move, Kennedy Agyapong appears poised to mount a vigorous campaign anchored by proven loyalists like Alhaji Baba Gushegu.
