The campaign team of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has announced a temporary suspension of all public commentary related to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer contest.
This is in solidarity with the family of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, whose passing was confirmed on Monday, July 7.
The decision comes as various political figures and groups continue to mourn the 40-year-old lawmaker, who died barely seven months after assuming office in Parliament.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews, the campaign’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, noted that while the team finds it necessary to hold off on detailed engagements on thie campaign out of respect for the deceased MP and his family.
“We are also well aware that as of now, we have received confirmation as a party of the demise of our brother, the Honorable Ernest Yaw Kumi. And in the spirit of solidarity and respect to himself and the entire family, I would want to withhold any detailed discussion with regard to any other issue outside this,” Mr Kwarteng said.
“I will respectfully want to plead with you and your platform to at least waiver from any further commentaries on the survey in solidarity and in commemoration and respect for my brother, the Honorable Ernest Yaw Kumi, MP for Akwatia,” he stated.
The move comes after a recent survey by a group called Sanity Africa tipped Kennedy Agyapong as the leading contender in the NPP’s upcoming flagbearer race.
However, Mr Kwarteng stressed that the focus for now is on mourning and supporting the bereaved family.
