Parliament has confirmed the appointment of Buem MP Kofi Adams as Ghana’s new Minister of Sports and Recreation following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama in January.
The approval came after Adams successfully went through vetting by the Appointments Committee last week, where he assured lawmakers of his commitment to holistically developing sports. A report on his vetting was laid before Parliament and subsequently adopted, clearing the way for his swearing-in by the President.
Adams has been urged to tread cautiously, particularly in the football sector. However, he has emphasised that while football remains a priority, he will also focus on developing other sporting disciplines.
During his vetting, Adams acknowledged concerns over his limited background in sports but reassured Ghanaians of his dedication. “I will not disappoint the President, Ghanaians, or myself; I will deliver,” he said.
His plans for the ministry include improving the Ghana Premier League by introducing stipends to retain top local talents, restructuring the National Sports Authority (NSA) to enhance its role, reviewing substandard AstroTurf projects, and implementing a grassroots sports development program modelled after a reverse pyramid strategy.
Adams strongly desires to restore Ghana’s sporting glory by prioritizing school and community sports to develop young talent for future international success.
