The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has announced Kofi Asamoah-Okyere as the winner of the 2nd Edition of the Youth Advocacy Challenge.

This quarter’s challenge focused on the theme: “Examine the Impact of Substance Abuse on Youth and Propose Creative Community-Based Solutions.”

The 16-year-old second-year science student at Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), stood out among numerous entries with his innovative and practical approach to tackling substance abuse among Ghanaian youth.

His proposal centred on community-driven strategies to reduce substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles—an effort shaped by his passion for advocacy and prior experiences.

Kofi Asamoah-Okyere was a finalist in the 2024 UBA National Essay Competition and represented Ghana at the 2025 Harvard World Schools Debate Tournament as a member of the National Debate Team.

The Youth Advocacy Challenge, an initiative under the UNICEF-funded Youth Engagement Centre (YEC) project, provides a platform for young Ghanaians to participate in national discourse.

It encourages creative, solutions-oriented thinking and empowers youth to become active agents of change.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to cultivate an informed, proactive, and engaged generation.

Recognition and Opportunities Ahead

Kofi Asamoah-Okyere’s winning entry was selected following a rigorous review by an evaluation panel. As part of his prize, he received a GH¢3,000 cash award and national recognition through publication in major media outlets.

His achievement underscores the importance of amplifying youth voices in addressing key social issues.

Commenting on the win, Angela Osei Gyan, Head of Corporate Affairs at GhLA, said, “The Youth Advocacy Challenge continues to demonstrate our belief in the power of young voices to inspire change. Kofi’s ideas remind us that youth advocacy is a cornerstone for building resilient communities.”

Next Challenge: Focus on Child Protection

Following the success of this edition, GhLA has announced that the 3rd Edition of the Youth Advocacy Challenge will focus on the theme of Child Protection.

Applications will soon open and will be advertised on all GhLA social media platforms (@ghanalibraries) and the official website (www.library.gov.gh).

Young people aged 14 to 24 are encouraged to participate by submitting essays on this critical topic.
