Kotoko suspend football activities following supporter’s death

Asante Kotoko have announced an indefinite suspension of all football activities following the tragic death of their staunch supporter, Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, who was stabbed during their league match against Nsoatreman at the Nana Koromansah II Stadium in Nsuatre.

This follows a meeting between the club’s management and the Ghana Police Service led by Inspector General George Akuffo Dampare on Tuesday morning.

The Porcupine Warriors suffered a 1-0 defeat, ending their seven-game unbeaten run, but the result has been overshadowed by the violent incident that claimed Pooley’s life. The club has demanded justice and insists it will not participate in any football-related activities until those responsible are held accountable.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana Police Service have launched investigations into the matter, with three individuals, including Nsoatreman FC owner and former Minister of State, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, arrested. However, Kotoko remain unsatisfied and have vowed not to return to action until they are convinced about the process.

“Asante Kotoko suspends all footballing activities of the senior team until further notice. Our stance remains unchanged—we will not resume footballing duties until justice is served and concrete steps are taken to prevent such barbaric acts from ever happening again,” the club said in a statement.

“Management has suspended all activities relating to the football pitch until further investigations into the matter. Our juvenile team and players recovering from injuries who require rehabilitation will be allowed at our training centre.”
