Kumasi City Market Traders Union (KCMTU) has called for a complete overhaul of the Kejetia Market’s management and structures, citing a myriad of unresolved challenges that have plagued the market for years.

The demand for change was a key focus during a recent meeting between the Union and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

According to Mr. Michael Adu-Gyamfi, Secretary of the KCMTU, the Kejetia Market has been grappling with issues such as billing irregularities, meter malfunctions, structural deficiencies, and overall poor management, leaving traders frustrated and worried.

The union believes a complete overhaul of the market’s management is necessary, including reforms to personnel, systems, and structures, in order to maximize the market’s potential and ensure the welfare of traders is well-supported.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mr. Adu-Gyamfi stated that the purpose of their visit was to express their deep concerns about the ongoing issues and advocate for significant changes. The KCMTU Secretary reported that the Minister has assured them that steps are being taken to address these challenges.

“As we’ve earlier indicated, we’ve encountered numerous challenges at the Kumasi City Market. What’s particularly concerning is that none of these challenges have been resolved. We are baffled and deeply worried about the current state of affairs.

“These challenges range from billing issues and meter problems to structural deficiencies, management structure, and the overall management architecture. Therefore, we believe a total overhaul and comprehensive reforms are necessary.” Mr. Adu-Gyamfi observed.

Mr. Adu-Gyamfi said that the minister plans to gather firsthand information about the difficulties traders face and work towards finding solutions. While acknowledging the complexity of the market’s issues, the KCMTU is cautiously optimistic about the future, expressing hope that the Minister will follow through on his promises and bring about positive change. The Union thanked the Minister for a successful meeting.
