Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

In a bid to revive the vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, for industrialisation and to rejuvenate Ghana’s manufacturing sector, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to bring this dream to life through his government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy.

According to President Mahama, the policy, launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, forms part of strategic initiatives aimed at unlocking the economic potential of inland Ghana.

He announced that the government plans to acquire 2 billion hectares of land for intensive agriculture under the Good24 programme, which will mobilise all sectors, from religious, security, academic, to civic, as part of efforts to enhance national productivity.

President Mahama also unveiled plans to establish agri-industrial parks focused on textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.

Speaking at the launch event at the Accra International Conference Centre, the President said, “The Volta Project at Akosombo was envisioned not only as a power source for Ghana’s industrial sector but also as an integrated project to provide business opportunities, irrigation, and non-soil agriculture.

“Unfortunately, that part of the vision has been lost. Today, we are recreating Kwame Nkrumah’s dream.”

He noted that Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah envisioned a self-reliant Ghana and Africa, driven by enhanced local production to propel economic growth.

Dr Nkrumah saw the Volta project not just as a source of hydroelectric power, but as the foundation for a broader agro-industrial revolution.

The 24-Hour Economy Policy is a flagship campaign promise of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the 2024 elections.

It is designed to tackle unemployment and boost productivity by promoting continuous, round-the-clock economic activities across key sectors.
