The Bokankye D/A Basic School in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region has been closed indefinitely due to alleged intimidation by land guards, according to community leaders and school officials.
The decision to close the school was made by Nana Yaw Poku, Otumfuo Akyeamehene’s Kyeame (spokesperson), in consultation with the community and the Ashanti Regional Ghana Education Service (GES). The closure comes amid escalating concerns for the safety and well-being of residents in Bokankye and surrounding areas.
Nana Yaw Poku alleges that Suaduhene, Nana Kwabena Bonsu Kanin lll, is orchestrating the land guard activity in an attempt to seize acres of land near Owabi without proper documentation. Residents claim the land guards stormed Bokankye and issued threats, warning them to leave the town if they valued their lives.
Francis Karikari, Assistant Headmaster of Bokankye D/A Basic School, confirmed the closure, stating, “We heard gunshot around the whole area putting fear and panic to the school pupils and authorities, therefore it will be prudent for authorities to solve the situation.”
The gunfire and resulting fear among students and staff prompted the immediate closure of the school until the situation is resolved.
