Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 while on admission in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.
This was confirmed by a statement released by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre.
The announcement, made on Sunday, July 13, described Buhari’s passing as a profound loss to Nigeria, noting his contributions during a critical period in the country’s history.
His administration was hailed for its focus on infrastructure and social intervention programs aimed at uplifting millions.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 after initially serving as a military leader, was praised for his resolve in steering the country through economic and security challenges during his tenure.
“President Buhari’s tenure came at a particularly challenging period in our nation’s history. He answered the call to serve when the country faced immense difficulties, and with steadfast resolve, he embarked on a mission to steer the ship toward a more prosperous course,” the statement read.
The statement further highlighted the late President’s focus on laying developmental foundations through massive infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
It also underscored his administration’s efforts to empower vulnerable communities through social intervention initiatives.
These efforts, the Media Centre noted, were pivotal in shaping the direction of Nigeria’s growth and will remain part of his enduring legacy.
“His dedication to service and his contributions to our nation will forever be a part of Nigeria’s story,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the President of the Federal Republic, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has since directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the late President.
