Late Ernest Kumi’s widow not eyeing Akwatia parliamentary seat — NPP

The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has debunked rumours that the widow of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi is preparing to step into her husband’s political shoes.

Mr. Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, was confirmed dead on Monday, July 7, after a short illness.

In the wake of his passing, a flyer circulating on social media suggested that Mrs. Mavis Kumi was preparing to contest the upcoming by-election to replace her husband in Parliament.

But in a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by Jeff Konadu Addo, the NPP’s Eastern Regional Chairman, the party described the claims as false and urged the public to dismiss them.

“We wish to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and should be treated with the utmost contempt it deserves,” the statement read.

It continued: “As a Party, we have been in close contact with Mrs. Mavis Kumi and her immediate family following the unfortunate passing of her husband, Hon. Ernest Kumi. In our discussions with her, she has unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat or participating in active politics at this time. Her current focus, as any grieving wife would understandably desire, is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace.”

The party further appealed to its members and the public to disregard the social media flyer, noting it does not reflect the wishes of Mrs. Kumi or the official position of the NPP.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DISREGARD FALSE FLYERS : MRS. MAVIS KUMI NOT EYEING AKWATIA PARLIAMENTARY SEAT

Tuesday, July 15, 2025
The attention of the Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been drawn to a flyer circulating on social media purporting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, the beloved wife of the late Hon. Ernest Kumi, is lacing her boots to contest the Akwatia parliamentary seat.

We wish to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and should be treated with the utmost contempt it deserves.

As a Party, we have been in close contact with Mrs. Mavis Kumi and her immediate family following the unfortunate passing of her husband, Hon. Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency. In our discussions with her, she has unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat, or participating in active politics at this time. Her current focus, as any grieving wife would understandably desire, is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace.

We respectfully urge all Party members, sympathizers, residents of the Akwatia Constituency, and the general public to disregard the flyer in circulation. It does not reflect the wishes or intentions of Mrs. Mavis Kumi, nor has it been sanctioned by the Party at any level.

At this difficult time, we must remain sensitive to the emotions and grief of the bereaved family. The memory of Hon. Ernest Kumi; a committed patriot and loyal servant of our Party and the people of Akwatia; deserves to be honored in truth and respect. Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family, and such conduct must be strongly discouraged.

We call on all to join us in offering continued prayers and support for Mrs. Kumi and her family. Let us uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that our Party stands for.

…….Signed……….

Jeff Konadu Addo
Eastern Regional Chairman
New Patriotic Party (NPP)
