Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Mamponghene and occupant of the Silver Stool of Asanteman.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away at the age of 86. The Mampong Traditional Council has since informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the death, in accordance with Asante custom.
The official announcement was made by the Council and the Bretuo Dynasty to the Asantehene on Monday, April 28.
In a post shared on social media the same day, the 2024 NPP flagbearer — who had previously received the late chief’s endorsement — described Daasebre as a father figure to him and his wife.
“Today is a very sad day for me. The announcement of the passing of the occupant of the Silver Stool, Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II, is not just shocking but devastating to me.
“Daasebre was a father to me and my wife, Samira. We enjoyed and cherished his wise counsel and support throughout our public and private lives,” he wrote.
Dr. Bawumia also extended his condolences to the widow, family, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asanteman, and the people of Asante Mampong.
“Hearing of the passing of such a genuine soul who was all-embracing and non-discriminatory is very sad. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, family, Otumfuo, Asanteman, and Asante Mampong. Kontonkyi, due!” he added.
