Legon lecturers drag Abronye to NPP over attacks on Ken Agyapong

A group calling itself Legon Lecturers and Professionals of the University of Ghana for Kennedy Agyapong, has formally petitioned the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to intervene and address the actions of Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.

The petition comes in response to what the group describes as “distasteful” and “unwarranted” verbal attacks by Abronye against Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central. Agyapong has declared his intention to contest the NPP’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, May 8, the group’s chairman, Professor Alhasaan Suleman Anamzoya, expressed concern that Abronye’s behavior poses a risk to the party’s internal harmony.

“Over the past few days, we have been seeing and hearing Chairman Abronye going about ranting about our candidate, Kennedy Agyapong. We feel that the party has been quiet for too long. We have indicated in the petition that it is solely about Kennedy Agyapong, but we are fighting for peace and unity in the party.

We want to tell the national leadership that the silence and quietness are disturbing. They should, at least, call Abronye to order for the sake of the peace of the party,” he stated.

Professor Anamzoya further called for fairness and mutual respect among party supporters as the contest for leadership intensifies.

“Nobody is happy to attack anybody’s candidate. Market your candidate, and we all go and see how who will win. But if you start to attack our candidate and nobody is speaking about it, we think that it is not good for the party.”

The group’s petition adds to the growing discourse within the NPP about how internal competition should be conducted ahead of the party’s next presidential primaries.
