Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has called for the rerun of 19 polling stations in the disputed Ablekuma North parliamentary elections to be conducted freely and fairly.
He noted that a transparent process would ensure that whichever party emerges victorious will be accepted by the losing side for peace to prevail.
“If the people choose the NDC, so be it. If they choose the NPP, we will rejoice. But let it be through a process that is free, fair, and fiercely contested,” Mr Agyapong said in a social media post on Thursday, July 10.
The NPP’s candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, is participating in the rerun even though the party’s National Executive Council has officially boycotted the polls.
The leadership insists that Akua Afriyie won the December 7 elections by over 400 votes against the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn.
But Mr Agyapong urged the party to reconsider its stance, stressing that retreating would harm the party’s credibility and weaken its grassroots support.
“To the National Executives, I respectfully urge a reconsideration of the decision to boycott. We must not retreat in the face of political pressure. We must remember what is at stake: the balance of parliamentary power, the morale of our grassroots, and the credibility of our party’s commitment to the democratic process.
“If we abandon this contest today, what precedent do we set for tomorrow? What shall we say when other critical seats are contested? How shall we answer future generations who ask whether we stood firm when the republic called?” he asked.
