Mahama allowing NDC ‘hawks’ to lead him to the path of disgrace

The former General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of allowing the ‘hawks’ in his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to lead him down a path of disgrace.

According to the experienced politician, the president’s decision to proceed with the controversial process of removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office is based on the advice of these party hardliners.

Speaking in an interview with Asaasepa Radio, which was shared on social media, John Boadu urged President Mahama to instead listen to the ‘doves’ or moderates within the NDC, who are against the unjustifiable removal of Justice Torkonoo, who is currently on suspension.

“I don’t think that John Mahama, considering what he has done over the years, should allow the ‘hawks’ in the NDC to disgrace him. He is the first president under the Fourth Republic to initiate the removal of a Chief Justice who is also a woman. We are telling the NDC that after removing the Chief Justice, they might as well remove the EC Chairperson too. Asiedu Nketiah has publicly stated that he does not understand why the EC Chairperson is still in office. This sets a bad precedent.”

John Boadu warned that if the NDC’s actions are not stopped immediately, future NPP governments might adopt the same approach.

“Whichever government comes to power should appoint its members, and when it is exiting, all those appointees should leave their respective offices. We need to understand this. I know the DNA of the NDC — when they lose an election and one of their members is removed from public office by a new government, they complain and organize demonstrations. That shouldn’t be the case. We must accept that anyone appointed by a government is expected to support that administration, and when it leaves office, the appointee should also go.

“Nobody needs to tell you — once your appointing government is out, you’re also out. John Mahama, who appointed you, is no longer in power, so you should join him at home. Let’s adopt this style and see if it benefits the nation. If we implement this system, perhaps CSOs will later step in to mediate, but by then, we would have practiced this approach for twelve to sixteen years — and only then will we truly reflect and make informed decisions.”
