Mahama directs local procurement of Free Sanitary Pads

President John Mahama has instructed that no sanitary pads be procured from outside Ghana under the Government’s Free Sanitary Pads Distribution for school girls.

This was disclosed by Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister, at a press conference at the Presidency in Accra to give an overview of the nation’s educational sector within the first half of 2025.

He said the Government was encouraging several local Ghanaian entities to set up sanitary pad production factories in the north, the middle belt, western and central regions.

Mr Iddrisu said Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, had proposed to the Education Ministry that government might even consider a partnership to set up a sanitary pad production unit in the prisons to make use of the labour to produce it.

President Mahama, on April 24, this year, launched the Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme for Girls in School in Accra.

The national launch was in fulfilment of the President’s campaign promise and as part of the Government’s broader commitment to gender equity in education.

It marked a significant step toward promoting menstrual health and hygiene, as well as improving educational outcomes for adolescent girls across the country.
