Mahama has done very well, Akufo-Addo also did very well but hopes were dashed – Prof Adei

Renowned economist and governance expert, Professor Stephen Adei, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for a solid and promising beginning to his new term, following the fulfilment of his widely discussed 120-day social contract with the people of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, May 7, Prof. Adei remarked, “Anybody who is objective would say he has done very well.”

He highlighted key achievements by the Mahama administration within its first four months, pointing to bold policy reversals, a significant reduction in the size of government, and the reopening of long-standing criminal investigations as clear indicators of reform-minded leadership.

Despite the commendation, Prof. Adei cautioned against rushing to celebrate, drawing parallels with past disappointments under previous administrations. “We must be very careful over praising John in 120 days,” he warned. “Because in the first term of Akufo-Addo, I think that he performed very well and then everybody’s hopes were dashed… and I think that Akufo-Addo’s government in the second term did so badly.”

He stressed that consistency over the full term—not just a strong start—is what ultimately determines the success or failure of any government. Prof. Adei expressed hope that Mahama would sustain his momentum, make needed adjustments where necessary, and stay focused on delivering long-term progress.

“We hope he will be able to continue and sustain it, make corrections of any lapses, and deliver the Ghana we want,” he concluded.
