Mahama has done well with 120-day social contract but his target should be galamsey – Nyaho-Tamakloe

Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has commended President Mahama for fulfilling some of his 120-day social contract promises to Ghanaians.

Before his assumption of office, then flagbearer of the NDC laid out 25 specific promises, boldly setting himself a 120-day deadline for full implementation if elected.

These pledges cut across critical sectors: nine economic promises, four governance reforms, seven in education and social welfare, three on national security and justice, and one each on environment and tourism, respectively.

The revered statesman, however, urged President Mahama to take decisive action against illegal mining in the country, indicating that government has not been too strong in tackling the menace.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 during the launch of his book ‘A Nation Into Retirement: A Narrative of a Statesman’ on May 7, 2025, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe said the President’s focus should be on addressing illegal mining activities in the country.

“He came out with a number of promises and what I see so far, he’s touched a lot of them. However, I am still not happy about the destruction of our water bodies.

“So even though he’s done so far so good, his main target for me should be the correction of the mess up that have been created by so-called mining in our forests,” he stated.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe opposed the directive by government to deport all foreigners caught engaged in illegal mining or galamsey.

He suggested that these individuals should be made to face the full rigours of the law including jail sentence, if need be before being deported.

“These people should be held responsible and secondly all those foreigners arrested have to go through the law courts of this country before they are deported.

“If the need be for them to be in prison, they must be in prison before they are deported,” he added.
