Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, has praised the government’s decision to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees.
President Mahama has directed an immediate end to the payment of fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees.
The directive, announced in a statement on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, forms part of measures to cut government spending and prioritize national development needs.
“President John Dramani Mahama has, effective immediately, directed the cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees,” the statement said.
Reacting in a social media post the same day, Bawah Mogtari described the move as refreshing and a serious effort to protect the public purse.
“This is very refreshing news. Scrapping fuel allowances and allocations to government appointees, cancelling DSTV and other small perks is how we build a more equitable society. The President is seriously protecting the public purse,” she wrote.
She added, “I still remember the humongous budget for the Office of Government Machinery (OGM) under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
According to her, the Energy Minister is expected to provide further details on the financial implications when he appears on the government’s #AccountabilitySeries.
Meanwhile, the GHS1 fuel levy, known widely as the dumsor levy, will take effect from Wednesday, July 16, after it was initially suspended fit further consultation.
