The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama of influencing state security agencies to stall the collation of parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North constituency.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on January 5, 2025, indefinitely suspended the collation of results for the constituency following discrepancies in results from 20 polling stations after the December 7, 2024, elections.
The contest was between the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh and the National Democratic Congress’ Ewurabena Aubynn—both of whom have declared themselves victorious.
In a statement dated June 18 and issued after a National Executive Council meeting, the NPP accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberately refusing to provide security for the collation process, in defiance of a court order.
“National Council noted with concern the contemptuous conduct of the Ghana Police who are working under the instruction of the Minister for Interior and the Attorney General in failing and refusing to comply with the orders of the High Court to provide security to the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of the Ablekuma North parliamentary results,” the party said.
It further alleged that the standoff is being orchestrated by President Mahama and the NDC, who are aware they have lost the seat.
“The only reason why His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and his NDC are not allowing the Police to provide security to the EC to complete the collation of the outstanding three (3) polling stations is because they know they have lost the elections, and are only bent on using the Police to frustrate this exercise and deny the good people of Ablekuma North a parliamentary representation.”
The NPP concluded by stating it will, in the coming days, roll out a series of actions to compel authorities to uphold the democratic rights of the people of Ablekuma North.
