The government has officially launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative, a program designed to distribute sanitary pads to schoolgirls throughout the country, with the aim of supporting their health and education.
The initiative was unveiled in Accra on Thursday, April 24th, with key stakeholders in attendance, including ministers, policymakers, education experts, and school representatives.
This intervention aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s broader vision of promoting gender equality and ensuring that every child can access quality education, regardless of gender or background.
President Mahama has previously emphasized the critical need to address the obstacles girls face due to menstruation. During his maiden State of the Nation Address, he stressed the importance of removing these barriers.
The program is expected to alleviate the financial burden on families, improve school attendance among girls, and enhance their overall health and well-being.

By providing access to essential menstrual hygiene products, the initiative seeks to foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Stakeholders believe that the initiative will significantly contribute to increased attendance and retention of girls in schools, ultimately helping to close the gender gap in education and empower young women nationwide.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has also cautioned his ministerial appointees about non-performance, urging them to prioritize results.
He delivered this message on April 24, 2025, during the opening day of a four-day Executive Leadership Programme for Ministerial Appointees.
