Mahama’s silence on Kotoko fan’s fatal stabbing after 72 hours worrying — Ahiagbah

The National Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticized President Mahama’s silence on the vandalism that occurred during a Ghana Premier League match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman Football Club.

The incident, which has attracted widespread condemnation, claimed the life of an ardent supporter of Asante Kotoko, Francis Yaw Frimpong, alias Pooley, who was stabbed during an altercation.

In a social media post on Wednesday, February 5, the NPP spokesperson stated that the President should not remain silent on a matter that threatens the country’s football and security.

“H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has not said a word for 72 hours and counting after Francis Yaw Frimpong alias Pooley was killed in cold blood after a football match in Nsoatre in the Bono Region.

“Why is the president silent on a matter that threatens football and security in Ghana?” his post read.

He further noted that the media would have mounted pressure on the President if it were former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in power.

“The media would be up in arms if Akufo-Addo were president. President Mahama must prioritize all citizens and show care for Francis Yaw Frimpong,” he stated.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since suspended the Premier League following the clash between players, officials, and fans of Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police is investigating the matter and has already arrested some suspects, including former Employment Minister Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who is also the team owner of Nsoatreman FC.

The former Minister and Member of Parliament has since been granted a bail with the court imposing travel restrictions on him.
