The Ghana Police Service has indicated that it has arrested the key suspect in the gruesome murder of a senior lecturer, Professor Amedeke, at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), whose body was found secretly buried behind his own home.

According to the police statement released on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the suspect, Joshua Karry Arthur, was apprehended on the same day, May 22, 2025, at the deceased’s residence in Essuokyir, Winneba.

It added that Investigators made a major breakthrough in the case when authorities discovered several personal belongings of the victim in Arthur’s possession at the time of his arrest.

The statement also explained that the investigation was launched after a colleague of the lecturer raised concerns over his unexplained absence, prompting the police to act immediately.

“The deceased lecturer had been reported missing on 21st May, 2025, by his colleagues, who had indicated to Police that all efforts to reach him had yielded no response. Police proceeded to the residence of the deceased, where the suspect was found and arrested,” it said.

When officers visited the lecturer’s home, they uncovered blood stains inside the residence. Their search led them to a nearby heap of sand, approximately 23 meters away, where the body was found buried.

The police have since retrieved the remains of the deceased, which has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“Police also discovered some blood stains, which were traced to a heap of sand about 23 meters from the house. Upon clearing the sand, a body believed to be that of the missing lecturer was found buried. The body was recovered and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that several items recovered from the suspect belonged to the deceased, including two Samsung phones, a laptop, a 50-inch television, and a Toyota Fortuner car key -all serving as critical evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The suspect remains in police custody, assisting with inquiries, and is expected to be arraigned before court soon.

The Central Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring justice in the case.
