Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of infrastructure and the lack of proper maintenance at some health facilities, particularly the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
During a visit to the hospital on May 14, the Minister inspected the Maternity and Surgical blocks following reports of poor conditions. He urged the hospital’s management to take immediate steps to improve safety and hygiene across the facility.
Korle-Bu, Ghana’s leading referral hospital, has recently faced public scrutiny over the worsening state of its infrastructure. Accompanied by a team of officials, the Minister toured several sections of the hospital, including wards, washrooms, and non-functioning elevators, where he observed several areas of concern.
Clearly dissatisfied with the conditions, the Minister called for an urgent shift in the culture of maintenance in the country’s healthcare system, emphasizing the need for consistent upkeep to ensure patient safety and operational efficiency.
In response, management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has assured the Minister that an emergency meeting will be convened to swiftly address the issues raised during the inspection.
