Mamprugu King rejects curfew, demands justice and peace in Bawku

Correspondence from the North East Region

In a bold move, the Nayiri, traditional ruler of Mamprugu, has publicly denounced the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and the surrounding communities.

The overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom is urging the government to reconsider its stance and engage in constructive dialogue to find alternative solutions.

A statement released by the Mamprugu Traditional Council on Monday, July 28, 2025, categorically condemned the murder of two male students at Nalerigu Senior High School, which occurred on Saturday evening.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for urgent action.

Rather than enforcing a curfew that may fuel further tensions, the Nayiri is advocating for sustainable solutions to address the longstanding conflict in Bawku.

He warns that politicians’ interference in the conflict has compromised his traditional authority and hindered efforts to achieve peace.

As the enskinning authority of Bawku Naaba, including the current 15th Bawku Naaba, Alhaji Seidu Abagre (Naa Sherigah), who was enskinned on February 15, 2023, the Nayiri urged the state to remain impartial and ensure a fair resolution to the conflict.

He appealed for peace to prevail, allowing Bawku to regain its former glory and prosperity.

Below is the full statement from the Mamprugu Traditional Council.

28TH JULY, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE NAYIRI PALACE ON THE IMPOSITION OF A CURFEW ON NALERIGU AND THE MURDER OF TWO STUDENTS OF NALERIGU SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The Nayiri Palace has taken grave notice of a communique circulating in the public domain announcing the imposition of a curfew from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Nalerigu and its environs effective July 27th 2025.

While Mamprugu remains firmly committed to the tenets of constitutional rule and acknowledges the responsibility of the state to ensure public safety and order, the Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed.

Nalerigu, the seat of the Mamprugu Kingdom, remains calm and peaceful. There is no ongoing conflict to warrant such a measure, and the failure of Government to consult the Office of the Nayiri before taking such a significant step amounts to a gross affront to the authority and dignity of Mamprugu.

It is troubling that Government continues to pursue a misguided policy of equating the longstanding conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area with the peace and stability that exists in Mamprugu, particularly in Walewale and now Nalerigu. This narrative is both false and dangerous. It undermines peaceful coexistence and risks sowing seeds of discord in a region that has remained law-abiding and accommodating, even in the face of provocation.

We call on the Government to refrain from such mischaracterizations and focus its attention where action is most urgently needed-on restoring lasting peace in Bawku through firm, fair, and impartial enforcement of law and order.

The justification offered for the curfew that it is to facilitate the evacuation of students from Nalerigu Senior High School-is unfortunate and unconvincing. Security cannot be maintained through reactive and poorly-informed decisions made from a distance. It is irresponsible to take such actions without the input of local actors and authorities on the ground.

The Palace unequivocally condemns, in the strongest terms, the heinous and cold-blooded murder of two innocent students of Nalerigu Senior High School. Their deaths are not only a loss to their immediate families, but also to Mamprugu and Ghana as a whole. These were vibrant, promising young lives-cut short.

The Nayiri and the Mamprugu Traditional Council extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all who mourn. We share in their grief and pain.

Mamprugu must not be made to suffer for the failure of the State to act decisively in Bawku. For years, the Palace has called on Government to take bold and sustained action to end the violence and impunity in that area.

Peace will not be achieved by neglecting the root causes of the conflict or by redirecting its consequences to innocent communities.

In view of these developments, the Palace demands the following:

1. An immediate lifting of the curfew on Nalerigu and its environs.

2. A full and transparent investigation into the murder of the Nalerigu SHS students, with perpetrators brought swiftly to justice.

3. An unqualified apology from Government for the manner in which the curfew was imposed-without consultation or regard for the authority of the Nayiri.

4. A commitment to proper engagement with traditional authorities and local stakeholders to strengthen peace, security, and development in Mamprugu.

The Nayiri Palace remains ever open to dialogue, collaboration, and sincere efforts that foster harmony and justice. Mamprugu stands for peace-but peace must never be mistaken for passivity.

May the memories of our fallen children inspire truth, justice, and a renewed commitment to protecting every life in our dear country.
