‘May our generosity not become a problem for us’ — Edudzi Tamakloe prays as Ghanaians grill Sammy Gyamfi

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Eduzi Tamakloe, has shared a pointed reflection on social media amid public criticism facing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over a controversial act of generosity.

In a Facebook post widely interpreted as a response to the unfolding situation, Mr. Tamakloe invoked a prayer for those whose good intentions are sometimes misunderstood.

“May the good Lord save us from all seen and unseen evil. God protect our benefactors. May our generosity not become a problem for us. Lessons learnt. God help us,” he wrote.

His comments come in the wake of a social media storm involving Sammy Gyamfi, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod.

A video surfaced showing him giving an undisclosed amount of money to self-styled evangelist and priestess Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agraada. The gesture has triggered intense scrutiny, particularly from within the NDC’s own ranks.

Though the purpose of the cash handover remains vague, it has drawn sharp criticism from party members and the wider public, many of whom questioned the judgment and optics of the act.

Responding to the controversy, Mr. Gyamfi issued a public apology, explaining the gesture as a private act of kindness that was never meant for public attention.

“Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours,” he stated. “To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need. I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable.”

Acknowledging the discontent from his party’s base, Mr. Gyamfi extended a direct apology to those affected by his actions.

“I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by the same. To all such comrades, I am sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views,” he stated.

Despite the backlash, he reaffirmed his commitment to his role and serving the public in good faith.

“Let me state, however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems, and help others has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President, for the development of our country,” he added.

The episode has reignited debate on the responsibilities of public officials, especially when personal acts intersect with public perception. As reactions continue, many are calling for more sensitivity and accountability in how public figures engage in acts of charity or personal goodwill.
