Tensions ran high in Yamfo, a town in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, after a violent clash between residents and police on Friday prompted military intervention to restore order.

The unrest began when a group of angry youth stormed the Yamfo Police Station, allegedly attempting to set it ablaze.

Armed military personnel were quickly deployed to the area and were forced to fire warning shots to disperse the mob and prevent further escalation.

When a reporter visited the town around 4 p.m., calm had largely returned, though a military presence remained to ensure stability.

According to local accounts, the confrontation stemmed from a police operation targeting a location suspected of being a hub for the use and sale of Indian hemp. During the raid, officers reportedly arrested a young man and allegedly subjected him to a brutal beating.

The suspect was later taken to the Yamfo Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. News of his death spread quickly, triggering outrage among residents. “When the youth heard he had died, they gathered and marched to the police station,” said Adams Ibrahim, a local lotto agent.

Health workers at the facility declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

As of the time of reporting, security sources confirmed that the police officers involved had been withdrawn from the Yamfo Police Station, and the situation remained under control.
