The Country Director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Dr. Dirk Aßmann, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, to congratulate him on his historic appointment as Ghana’s first-ever minister in this portfolio.

This milestone underscores the commitment of the government, led by John Dramani Mahama, to tackling climate change and advancing sustainability efforts in Ghana.

During the visit, Dr. Aßmann commended the government’s proactive approach to climate action and discussed potential areas of collaboration between Ghana and Germany in addressing climate and environmental challenges.

He highlighted GIZ’s extensive work in Ghana, which includes initiatives on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience, expressing optimism about strengthening ties for mutual benefit.

“GIZ has been a long-standing partner in Ghana’s development journey, particularly in climate action and sustainability. We look forward to working closely with the Ministry to advance innovative solutions and policy frameworks that will drive Ghana’s climate agenda forward,” Dr. Aßmann stated.

On his part, Seidu Issifu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to climate action, emphasising that Ghana is poised to take a leadership role in climate change and sustainability within the sub-region and beyond.

He welcomed the partnership with GIZ and other development agencies, stating that Ghana is determined to implement policies and programs that align with global sustainability goals.

“Our vision is to position Ghana as a leader in climate action, setting an example for the region in resilience, sustainability, and green development. We are committed to leveraging partnerships like this to drive real impact,” Seidu Issifu remarked.

Dr. Aßmann was accompanied by Franziska Jebens, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of the Republic of Germany, along with other senior officials from GIZ.

The discussions concluded on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation on climate change initiatives.

The visit marks a significant step in strengthening Ghana-Germany relations on climate change and sustainability, paving the way for impactful partnerships that will benefit both nations in the long run.
