The Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has criticised the Minority caucus for walking out ahead of the presentation of the 2025 mid-year budget review.
According to him, the real motive behind the boycott by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs was to avoid being confronted with the achievements of the Mahama-led administration in fixing the economic mess the NPP allegedly left behind.
Speaking after the budget was presented on Thursday, July 24, Mr. Ayariga said the Minority’s explanation that their action was in protest of electoral violence was not convincing enough to justify abandoning a critical national assignment.
“I’m not surprised that our friends opposite fled the chamber before he presented the mid-year review. It is obvious that they have been monitoring the performance of the economy, and they knew that this mid-year review was going to unearth the wastage, the thievery, and the mess that was bequeathed to the NDC government — the abysmal performance of our predecessors. They knew he was going to recount the very positive steps that have been taken in the last six months,” he said.
He continued, “This is indeed the basis of the Minority fleeing the chamber before the presentation of the budget. Every Ghanaian knows that the incidents that happened in Ablekuma North are not grave enough to warrant a complete boycott of a mid-year budget review, which concerns the welfare of all Ghanaians.”
The Minority caucus in Parliament staged a walkout just before the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, delivered the mid-year budget review.
Clad in black, NPP MPs left the chamber on Thursday, July 24, to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama over concerns about electoral violence and illegal mining activities.
