More power generating under construction at Anwomaso

Anwomaso, a sprawling community in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region, is gradually becoming the hub of electricity power generation in the middle belt of the country.

This is because several independent power-producing companies are currently establishing plants there to generate electricity to be supplied to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for onward distribution to customers in the middle and northern belts of the country.

Currently, about three different companies and a gas supply company, are establishing plants and it is expected that by the end of 2025, these plants would be completed to improve and enhance power generation in the country.

The companies are Aska Energy, CENIT Energy, Kumasi 1 Terminal Plant (K1TPP), formerly known as AMERI, and Genser Energy.

These came to light on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, when a team of ECG officials, led by Mr Benjamin Baiden, Director of New Business and Risk Management, paid a working visit to Anwomaso, the second Bulk Power Supply Point in the country.

The visit was for the team to monitor and familiarize themselves with the progress of work on the ongoing projects to ensure their speedy completion.

The Aska Energy Company is expected to complete phase one of the construction project in May and phase two by the end of 2025, to contribute 205 Mega Watts (MW) to the national grid.

The CENIT Energy Company is expected to generate 330MW to be added to the national grid by the third quarter of the year.

The Volta River Authority (VRA), which is currently operating a six-unit K1TPP with a capacity between 138MW to 145MW, have had four units successfully relocated from the Western region to Anwomaso.

The remaining two units that formed part of the second phase of relocating the former AMERI Plant to the Ashanti region, is to be completed by July 2025.

The Genser Energy Company is expected to supply gas to all the plants once the projects are completed successfully.

Mr. Baiden, urged the companies to strictly abide by the local content and gender parity law to ensure that local people were employed and more women given opportunity to work in the companies.

Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Ashanti West region Public Relations Officer of the ECG, said the projects were in the right direction to improve power supply in the middle and northern belts, of the country.

He noted that the completion of the projects would reduce the challenge with transmission losses and improve the voltage profile of the region.

“Once power will be generated at Anwomaso, our cherished customers will be closer to the source, the voltage profile will improve and transmission losses will also reduce,” he said.
