Mpraeso MP criticizes NPP’s constitutional amendment call, demands release of ‘Defeat Report’ first

Member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency, Davis Ansah Opoku, has publicly criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) call for constitutional amendment proposals, questioning the basis for such a move without the release of the party’s electoral defeat investigation report.

In a Facebook post, Opoku expressed surprise at the party’s decision to solicit amendment proposals, especially after a committee was formed to investigate the reasons behind the NPP’s electoral defeat. He recalled his own involvement in the committee’s work in the Mpraeso Constituency, emphasizing the seriousness with which he treated the exercise.

“Surprisingly, the same party — of which we are all integral members — charged a committee to investigate the reasons behind our electoral defeat,” Opoku stated. “When the committee visited the Mpraeso Constituency, I had to rush down to meet with them and immediately return to Parliament to fulfil my duties. That’s how seriously I took the exercise.“

Opoku raised concerns about the lack of communication regarding the committee’s findings, questioning the basis for the proposed constitutional amendments.

“Now that the committee has completed its work, not even a communique has been issued to share the executive summary of its findings. Instead, are we being invited to submit proposals for constitutional amendments? Proposals based on what data? On what facts? On what diagnosis?” he asked.

The MP urged the NPP leadership to prioritize transparency and address the party’s challenges head-on.

“The national party must take its members seriously. This is not how you recover from a humiliating defeat. We cannot pretend to fix the structure without first acknowledging what broke it. If we fail to open up the sore and press it properly, it will not heal. Let us get it right,” he emphasized.

Opoku’s comments highlight growing concerns within the NPP about the party’s direction following the 2024 electoral defeat and the need for a comprehensive review and reform process.
