A deadly collision between a VIP passenger bus and a cargo truck has left several people dead and many others seriously injured on the Accra–Kumasi Highway, in one of the most harrowing road accidents this year.
The crash occurred on Wednesday, June 25, near Oframase, a community close to Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene after a VIP bus, bearing registration number GR-2399, smashed head-on into a cargo truck loaded with flour.
The impact of the collision was so severe that some victims were reportedly mutilated beyond recognition. First responders, including officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and emergency health personnel, rushed to the scene and worked frantically to recover bodies and transport the injured.
The wreckage of both vehicles was cleared to allow traffic to resume on the busy highway, which connects two of Ghana’s major cities.
Scores of injured passengers have been rushed to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and other nearby health facilities. Medical personnel say several victims are in critical condition.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of fatalities, noting that the condition of some bodies has made identification difficult.
Preliminary accounts from road users and local residents have linked the accident to the poor state of the highway. The stretch around Oframase, in particular, has become notorious for deep potholes and uneven surfaces, which many say have turned the road into a death trap.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the specific cause of the crash. Officials from the Ghana Police Service and the Kwahu West Municipal Fire Department are expected to release a formal statement in the coming days.
This latest tragedy has once again spotlighted Ghana’s worsening road safety crisis, as the country continues to witness a rise in fatal highway crashes blamed on speeding, negligence, and deteriorating infrastructure.
