NDC has disingenuously scammed Ghanaians with dumsor levy — Rev Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has slammed the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the introduction of the dumsor levy.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker described the move as a scam and an act of deception, citing how the ruling party, while in opposition, vowed not to burden Ghanaians with more taxes.

In a social media post on Thursday, sighted by ModernGhana News, the former Deputy Education Minister said the new levy is even more burdensome than the now-repealed electronic transaction levy (E-Levy), which the NDC previously condemned.

“NDC has disingenuously SCAMMED Ghana with D-Levy! NDC’s Dumsor Levy is far worse than E-Levy that was demonised.

“On E-Levy, you paid GHS10 on every GHS1,000 MoMo you sent, yet we all agreed it needed to be abolished. On D-Levy, you’ll pay GHS83 on every GHS1,000 of fuel you buy,” he wrote.

He added that the financial strain will trickle down to ordinary Ghanaians, especially passengers who rely on commercial drivers and Okada riders.

“In the end, our citizens will be ripped off big time for the votes they cast for NDC. People were unhappy with GHS10 levy on GHS1,000, but now will be extremely frustrated having to pay GHS83 levy on every GHS1,000 fuel,” he stressed.

His comment comes after Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, passed the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, under a certificate of urgency.

The new law introduces a GHS1 charge on every litre of fuel to help address mounting liabilities in the energy sector.

The Minority staged a walkout during the passage, accusing the government of deepening the tax burden on citizens.
