NKWANSEC Final Year student killed in renewed ethnic clash in Oti Region

A final-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School (NKWANSEC) has tragically lost his life amid fresh ethnic clashes between the Akyode and Challa communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

The incident happened on the morning of Friday, June 27, 2025, when violence broke out between the two groups. Stray bullets from the confrontation struck the student as he was returning to his dormitory after completing a mock examination in preparation for the upcoming 2025 West African Examinations (WAEC).

According to the Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Jonathan Korsina, the student died instantly. Although he confirmed the incident, he declined to disclose the identity of the victim.

Sources indicate that the deceased hailed from Saboba in the Northern Region and was pursuing his secondary education at NKWANSEC.

The renewed hostilities reportedly erupted after one faction attempted to perform traditional libation rites to mark the beginning of the yam festival season. This act was allegedly opposed by the rival group, leading to a violent confrontation.

The incident has heightened tensions in the area and raised concerns about student safety, particularly for those residing and studying in conflict-prone zones. Local authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the broader security measures being taken in response to the unrest.
