The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) has banned the use of motorbikes after 7:00 pm as part of measures to curb rising insecurity in the region.

The Council also reminded the public that the use of unlicensed motorbikes and those without functioning lights stands prohibited.

In a statement dated July 25 and signed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the RCC said the decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) held on July 24.

“No motorbikes shall be permitted on the roads after 7:00 pm until further notice. The use of unlicensed motorbikes or motorbikes without lights is strictly prohibited,” part of the statement read.

The RCC also directed that “no motorbike rider is permitted to wear a smock until further notice, as it has become an avenue for suspects to conceal weapons.”

The new directive follows the killing of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase, who was shot dead at his residence in Asewase on Tuesday, July 22.

The Council added that there will be increased security presence in identified hotspot areas involving both the police and military to ensure peace and protect lives and property.
