The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has described as misplaced, calls by the Minority caucus in Parliament for the release of a load-shedding timetable amid recent erratic power supply.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, at a press conference on Monday, May 19, expressed frustration over what they described as government’s silence in the face of an unannounced return of dumsor.
They called for a reliable load-shedding timetable to enable individuals and businesses to navigate the current power outages.
However, in a statement issued the same day and signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, the government insisted that the country has enough generation capacity to meet current power demand.
It pledged to work with stakeholders in the sector to permanently resolve the challenges it inherited from the previous administration.
“It is instructive to note that as a country, our current power supply capacity is adequate to meet existing demand, even during peak hours.
“The current power generation capacity is sufficient to meet peak demand; hence, there is no basis for a load-shedding timetable at this time,” the statement said.
The ministry added, “Whilst acknowledging that we inherited an extremely challenged distribution system, the government and the power sector players continue to take the needed steps to permanently resolve these challenges.”
