Nobody should expect 9th Council of State members to be ‘YES’ people – Sophia Akuffo

A member of the ninth Council of State, Justice Sophia Akuffo has assured Ghanaians that the Council will perform its task to the best ability.

The former Chief Justice said Ghanaians should not expect the members of the Council of State to be mere followers but capable of executing their constitutional mandate to the latter.

She gave the assurance in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, February 23, 2025.

“Nobody should expect this Council of State to be a bunch of ‘YES’ people with a head mentality just following along but being serious and steady and critical and applying outmost integrity to what we will be doing,” she stated.

Referencing the constitutional mandate of the Council of State, Madam Sophia Akuffo noted that Council of State as envisaged by the constitution is not intended to be partisan institution, rather it is made up of people with experience, set up to advise the President.

She added that the advice offered to the President even if it is not binding on him, he’s expected to respect it and therefore take into serious consideration before finally coming to his decision.

Sophia Akuffo further disagreed with calls for the Council of State to be abolished.

“In a country where we are more tickled by excitement and by sensation, people working in their little corner are not deemed to be exciting. There would be those who will in my view frequently say what’s the use of the Council of State, we haven’t even heard of them.

“You don’t have to hear of them or that is important is that they should be people who are giving sage advice to the person at the helm of affairs,” she explained.
