Dr Mahamudu Bawumia [L] and Mustapha Gbande
Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has defended NDC Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George amid growing calls for him to apologise over comments directed at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Samuel George who is also the Minister for Communications, has lashed out at Dr Bawumia’s for his comments on the violence that disrupted the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on July 11, 2025.
In a strongly worded social media post on Friday, Sam George stated:
“Someone should tell Bawumia to shut up. What did he say about Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019?”
His comments were in response to Dr. Bawumia’s earlier condemnation of the chaos that erupted at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where a group of unidentified men violently disrupted voting.
The clash led to the assault of political figures including former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, and injuries to other NPP members and a journalist.
Dr. Bawumia, who is leading the NPP into the December 2024 presidential election, warned that Ghana’s democratic stability is at risk if political violence becomes normalized.
“This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party raises its own army,” he said.
He further urged President John Mahama to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
A section of the public has condemned Sam George and urged him to retract and apologise to the former second gentleman of the land.
But commenting on the issue in a panel discussion on Joy News monitored by GhanaWeb, Mustapha Gbande who is also the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency said Dr Bawumia lacks the moral authority to criticise others, especially given his silence on several acts of political violence and controversial statements by members of his own party.
“Nobody sides with the Vice President because it is preposterous for him to make that statement,” Gbande said in a fiery response. “This is a Vice President who never condemned the Ayawaso West Wuogon violence, a Vice President whose attaché is the National Youth Organiser of the NPP. Go and check what Mustapha Salam said—that they will prepare and die for the ballot.”
Gbande pointed out that the NPP National Youth Organiser had made inflammatory remarks without any condemnation from Dr. Bawumia, yet the Vice President is quick to criticise opposing views. “Bawumia is sitting down and condemning what?” he quizzed.
Turning his focus to the backlash against Sam George, Gbande questioned the basis of the calls for an apology. “Why should Sam George apologise to Ghanaians? He didn’t say it to Ghanaians; he said it to Bawumia,” he argued. “How is that offensive to Ghanaians? Have Ghanaians complained?”
